Void Stranger is a 2D sokoban-style puzzle game where every step counts.

Descend into the forgotten labyrinth teeming with fiendish foes and traps that defy reason. A swift defeat lurks at every corner for those who neither study their surroundings nor think their moves through with care.
Trust you wits and slowly, surely, you will conquer the mysteries before you.

You do remember why you are here, right?

Or have you lost something?

Something very important to you.

Includes:

  • 2D pixel art visuals with an appropriate soundtrack
  • Plethora of seemingly impossible puzzles
  • A story seeping through the seams of the Void
  • Several stages of frustration
  • A long road to follow

Tips:

  • The game autosaves between each room, so take it easy
  • If a puzzle seems impossible, get some rest
  • If that doesn't help, try asking someone for help
  • Good luck!

Playdate port when? :D

I just came across Void Stranger today, and a Playdate version came to mind immediately!  I'm just going off the video I saw, but the graphical style definitely looks like it could work very well with the Playdate.

I can't say a lot, but I can say there would be a few painful moment for playdate port

I have played more than 350 games. Just finished playing this one (buyed on steam). Now it is my favourite game. I cried so much, I whish it becomes famous, really, and for people to make content and products about this game.

i feel the same way about it, having nevr played it; just watching it form a distance

(+4)

Void Stranger managed to subtly subvert my expectations so many times in the first 5 minutes that I had to stop and write this 2,400 word blog about it before continuing...

i wasn't able to leave a comment on your blog, so i'll waste space here.
when i was offered the fruit, the more immediate parallel struck me not as the forbidden fruit in eden, but the pomegranate in hades, whereby eating of it, persephone was disallowed to leave the underworld. they figured out a loophole for her but still, the "you can roam the void but you can't leave" comment from the imp reminded me most immediately of that

I've been playing the Steam version of this game and, while i actually admit to not have been a huge fan of puzzles and riddles, this game is what i describe one of the most life changing ones.

I enjoyed your earlier game ZeroRanger years back and i admire your design particularities you gave for this one as well! Actually, i actually came back replaying ZeroRanger to give another try and i'm still thrilled up!

I'm already waiting for future updates. Keep up the good work!

Sorry I'm not too savvy about the soundtrack being separate purchase. How would I add it to the game? Also, can I download the game to more than 1 computer after purchase?

(+7)

The soundtrack album is simply a separate release you can purchase if you wish to support our composer.

In other words, you don't have to "add" it into the game.

You can download the game as many times as you want (or just copy the game files to another computer), there's no DRM in itch.io release.

(+3)(-1)

So the music is already on the game, correct? And I don't have to repurchase to put it on 2 computers?

(+4)

Yes, the music is in the game.  Once purchased, you can download the game from your itch account as many times you want and install it on multiple computers as well.

(+4)

I appreciate you being kind and direct in response to this question (unlike whoever downvoted them). We all start learning from somewhere.

(-3)

What about the Tiger Game.com, are there any plans to release it on the Game.com?

(+1)

Is the music included?

(+1)

The OST is available on Steam and Bandcamp as its own purchase, titled Elegy of the Stars -Void Stranger Original Soundtrack-.

(+1)

This stylistically looks like it would fit super well on the Playdate. Are there any plans to release it on Playdate?

(+1)

Do I have to use Steam to play this game? I would love hard disc.

(+3)

If you buy it on here, you’re given a DRM-free copy as well as a Steam key. So you do not have to use Steam.

(+2)

is it possible to play this on a Mac?

(+1)

You could try using a wine build on MacOS, though it seems from the ProtonDB side that you'll have to set wine or Proton to force use D3D11 and setgamescope manually for windowed sessions (you'd also have to do this on the Steam version using Proton, as both are wrappers that function in a nearly identical manner). It may be the case that these issues have been patched, as some users are reporting no errors in default prefixes.

TL;DR: maybe with a software wrapper

This is my favorite game of all time now. I have really no other way to put it. Just... It's my favorite video game I have ever played, and I don't think it'll ever be dethroned. Thank you all for making it.

game of the year.

(+1)

I accidentally said I wanted to be revived, is there a way to reverse this?

(+1)

if you want to restart instead, just fall into a pit over and over until a cutscene plays. (you can button mash to resume playing if this gets triggered by mistake ).

Thank you for this, this game is like, my game of the year now lol

I'm only to the second birch tree but I'm already so so so happy. Thanks for making this. So far this is amazing.

This game is a legitimately magical experience. Thank you.

(+1)

do you plan to release a linux version? or at least know if this runs fine under wine?

thank you for your time

(+1)

it runs fine under wine, i played entirely on a steam deck and on a desktop mint install

thank you!

Nice void game

Played for over 100 hours. I can't say that for a lot of games. This is an extremely worthy experience, and I cannot recommend it enough. Thank you SE!

 oh what to play...

There's some Nihei inspiration in this, right?

(+2)

This is likely to be my game of the year for 2023. Can't stop playing...

(+4)

how do you even conceptualize this, genius

im not playing this game cause im not good at this sort of thing but i love watching friends play it and i bought it for the soundtrack

Wow the music in the trailer is great !

(+1)

Amazing game so far, exactly what I was looking for!

(+4)(-9)

Looks cool, any interest in porting this to Playdate? Perhaps I could help, see my profile page 🙂

Atmosphere, mystery, mind-screw, cool art, big jigglin' tiddies...

Loving everything so far <3 This is THE game I was actually excited for this year

It's great Sokoban game!

HYPE <3

This is exciting!! The world needs more SE games. By the way, the ZeroRanger Discord server is working hard at deciphering these trailers ;) saimaa!!

(1 edit)

Is the server still accessible, by any chance?

-Matt

Yes, there should be a link in ZeroRanger's Steam Community forum.

Congratulations on the release! I have been looking forward to trying out this game for some time. If Zero Ranger is any indication of the fun surprises Void Stranger might contain, I'm excited!
